Tarragonès

Tarragonès is located in the lower course of the rivers Francolí and Gaià. It has 60 km of coastline, with beautiful golden beaches, which together with the mild climate and low rainfall, make Tarragonès an ideal place to live all year round. It is located on the Mediterranean coast, between the Baix Penedès region to the northeast and the Baix Camp region to the south. More than 60% of the population lives in Tarragona, the capital.

Tarragona, capital of the region, has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It has an extensive and rich Roman heritage; an old town where the essence of the medieval city is preserved intact; an original maritime district, and the Balcony of the Mediterranean, a viewpoint with spectacular views of the sea.

Economic activities are centered on tourism and the petrochemical industry, the most representative of the region. The northeastern area maintains an important agricultural activity that stands out for the cultivation of hazelnut trees, olive trees, almond trees, vineyards and orchards, and for pig and poultry farming. Within the commercial activity it is worth mentioning the Port of Tarragona, one of the most important commercial, passenger, fishing and sports maritime ports on the Mediterranean coast. In the tourism sector, the PortAventura World amusement park and Ferrari Land, the largest of its kind in Spain, are of particular note.

An excellent road network connects the region’s cities. The AP-7/E-15 freeway and the A-7 highway cross the region following the coast. The port of Tarragona is an important Mediterranean transit point and there are marinas in Tarragona and Torredembarra, and smaller ones in Salou and Cambrils. There are rail connections to the cities of Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid, including high-speed trains, and a seasonal airport in Reus, which connects the province of Tarragona with other European countries.

The municipalities of the region are: Tarragona, Altafulla; Salou, Torredembarra, Roda de Berà, Vila-seca, La Riera de Gaià, La Nou de Gaià, El Catllar, Els Pallaresos, Creixell, La Secuita, Perafort, Vilallonga del Camp, Vespella de Gaià, La Pobla de Montornès, El Morell, Salomó, Renau, La Canonja, La Pobla de Mafumet, and Constantí.
